Shaking Through - Sonoi

Volume 2 in the Shaking Through Series: Sonoi

Sonoi

Out from the ashes of bands such as Manishevitz and The Curious Digit, emerges Sonoi, a thrilling trio from Chicago that blends jazz and pop sentiments with a backdrop of complex and often ethereal instrumental textures. After Adam Busch and Pierce Doerr were joined by Ryan Hembrey in 2007, the trio began performing with top avant/rock acts including MV&EE and Plastic People of the Universe, an impressive feat for a band that had been playing live for less than year.

With their eponymous debut album due for release in April, WXPN and Weathervane Music provide you with an exciting opportunity to delve inside and behind Sonoi's remarkable music making process.

There is something unexpectedly exciting yet serene about the way Sonoi wanders through layers of pulsating and scattered drums, improvised trumpets, airy flutes and reverberating guitar. Wave after wave, their warmly composed instrumentals collide with lyrcial word painting to create a portrait of serenity. But beneath all of this beautiful meandering is a solid foundation of readily accessible pop structures. From the sonically challenging instrumentals of "Friends in Dry Places" to the solidly pop "Sherry Falls" and "Eva Baton," Sonoi is not afraid to dabble with both the known and unknown; and their constant play with rhythm, rough edged vocals and textures is a testament to that.
